'Wired' publishes complete Bradley Manning/Lamo chat logs

Excerpts of the Bradley Manning~Adrian Lamo chat logs have been released in various contexts and at various websites and news outlets since June 2010. Wired Magazine broke the story at that time, initially publishing only the portions that they felt were relevant without crossing their own journalistic integrity 'line' (they were, in those early 'breaking story' days, concerned about revealing potential military secrets as well as personal information about those involved in the case). Remember, the Manning case was in the initial stages of an ongoing investigation, and our government was vociferously stating that National Security issues were involved.

Today, with only a few redactions to protect sensitive names, and in one case, a password, Wired Magazine has released the entire chat log transcript to the public.

Wikileaks posts an Insurance policy

Wikileaks Afghanistan War Diary

It seems that Wikileaks has posted a massive (1.4 GB, 10x larger than all the other files on the page combined) heavily encrypted file on their dedicated "Afghan War Diary" page labeled simply "Insurance". (See link above)

Possibly in response to the harsh rhetoric issuing from the US DoD regarding Wikileak's founder Julian Assange (including the rumored price on his head), sometime last Sunday afternoon the new file was quietly uploaded with no explanation.

The Daily Beast is reporting the Pentagon has a manhunt currently underway for Wikileaks' founder Julian Assange.

Wolves, Hunting, And "The Big Howl"

Just wanted to pass along this email I got from the NRDC, so anyone who didn't know about Obama's Interior Secretary Salazar's plan to allow wolf hunting to commence in May can take action.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~
In just a few weeks, the mass killing of wolves could begin in Idaho and Montana -- and not even newborn wolf pups and their nursing mothers will be spared.
Please don't miss this opportunity to speak out before this slaughter unfolds. On May 4, the wolf's federal protection will be lifted, and hunters and government agents will be free to open fire. After that, the states will launch public hunts, targeting wolves.
Time is critical, so please take a moment to act now to call off what may become a disaster to the survival prospects of wolves living in and around Yellowstone National Park and the Norther Rockies.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Dear Lisa,

Thanks again for answering the wolf's distress call by telling Interior Secretary Salazar to protect wolves as part of our "Big Howl" campaign.

The response has been amazing. In just 24 hours, over 55,000 people "howled" to tell the government to call off the guns.

Gibbs: Obama "absolutely" agrees with DoJ "states secrets" filing

According to White House Press Secretary Gibbs, who spoke yesterday to reporters, President Obama agrees with the position taken by his DoJ.

Responding late Friday afternoon to a suit filed by the EFF against the NSA, the Justice Department

argued that the case should be dismissed because information surrounding the program was a “state secret” and therefore couldn’t be litigated or discussed. It also proposed that the government was protected by “sovereign immunity” under federal wiretapping statutes and the Patriot Act, arguing that the United States could only face lawsuits if they willfully elected to disclose intelligence obtained by wiretapping.

In response to a question at Thursday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said that President Obama stands firmly behind a Justice Department brief filed last week which aims to have a civil liberties group’s lawsuit dismissed.

He “absolutely does,” Gibbs said. “Obviously, these are programs that have been debated and discussed, but the President does support that viewpoint.”

Pretty tough to take this in any way except that which is stated. President Obama agrees with the Bush administrations claims for immunity and "states secrets" in the case of clear FISA violations and illegal wiretapping.

Obama = Bush, when it comes to Warrantless Wiretapping

From "Electronic Frontier Foundation" (EFF):

Obama Administration Embraces Bush Position on Warrantless Wiretapping and Secrecy
Says Court Must Dismiss Jewel v. NSA to Protect 'State Secrets'

San Francisco - The Obama administration formally adopted the Bush administration's position that the courts cannot judge the legality of the National Security Agency's (NSA's) warrantless wiretapping program, filing a motion to dismiss Jewel v. NSA late Friday.

In Jewel v. NSA, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is challenging the agency's dragnet surveillance of millions of ordinary Americans. The Obama Justice Department claims in its motion that litigation over the wiretapping program would require the government to disclose privileged "state secrets." These are essentially the same arguments made by the Bush administration three years ago in Hepting v. AT&T, EFF's lawsuit against one of the telecom giants complicit in the NSA spying.

Sen. Leahy bails on "Truth" commission!? The Senator responds!

IMPORTANT NOTICE: This afternoon, Senator Leahy's website posted a statement that he is still actively pursuing the "Truth Commissions" idea.

WASHINGTON (Thursday, April 2, 2009) – In a statement released Thursday, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) continued his push to establish a nonpartisan “Commission of Inquiry.”

In contrast to reports circulating on the Internet, Leahy said he is continuing to explore the proposal.

“I am not interested in a panel comprised of partisans intent on advancing partisan conclusions,” Leahy said. “I regret that Senate Republicans have approached this matter to date as partisans. That was not my intent or focus. Indeed, it will take bipartisan support in order to move this forward. I continue to talk about this prospect with others in Congress, and with outside groups and experts. I continue to call on Republicans to recognize that this is not about partisan politics. It is about being honest with ourselves as a country. We need to move forward together.”
